Stewarton United hosted their inaugural Pre-Season Tournament at Stewarton Sports Centre on 22nd, 23rd and 29th July. The teams who participated were Stewarton United, Hurlford AFC (Ayrshire Premier Division), Tarbolton AFC (Ayrshire Premier Division) and Blantyre RGM (Central Scottish League).
Day 1 saw Blantyre RGM face Tarbolton, with Tarbolton running out 2-0 victors. This was followed Blantyre RGM taking on Hurlford which finished 5-2 in Hurlford’s favour.
Day 2 saw the hosts playing two matches back to back. First up were Hurlford with the match finishing in a stalemate at 1-1, Paul Leonard getting the goal for United. United went one better in the second game and were able to beat Tarbolton 3-1, with goals from Paul Leonard, Elliot Duffy and Andrew Sibbald.
Those results meant that going into the final games on 29th, 3 teams could still win the tournament. The first game saw Tarbolton take the points with goals late in the match earning them a 3-2 victory. This meant that United needed a win in the last game of the tournament to win the trophy. Unfortunately they were unable to do this going down 6-3 to Blantyre RGM with goals from Andrew Sibbald, Paul Leonard and William Hastings.
Thanks to Tarbolton, Hurlford AFC and Blantyre RGM for attending, everyone who came to support the teams and to the Smuggler’s Inn for providing the after match hospitality. The club are looking forward to next year’s tournament already.
