PRESS RELEASE                                                                        1st February 2015

Bonnet Guild Festival Week 2015

13th to 21st June 2015

The Bonnet Guild is pleased to announce that Stewarton’s 2015 festival week will run from Saturday 13th June to Sunday 21st June with the highlight of the week, the crowning of the Corsehill Queen taking place on Gala Day, Saturday, 20 June.

But the Guild urgently needs your support to help with the running of festival week. Gordon Bennett, President explains “We need to grow the membership of the Bonnet Guild if we are to assure the future of our gala week.  I’d like to encourage anyone who is interested in participating, to consider joining the Guild.

We are actively encouraging new, community-spirited folks to come forward, male or female, bringing with them new ideas, new enthusiasm and new members.  The regular time commitment isn’t huge – we only meet once a month on the last Thursday, from Sept to June at 7.30pm and duties during gala week are evenly spread.  So if you like the fact that Stewarton has a gala, please get involved.  It’s your community, your festival and we’d love to see you!”

The eagerly anticipated festival returns with a week of fun, games and activities planned, for all ages to enjoy. On Gala Day, 20 June, the community will gather together to watch the annual coronation of the Corsehill Queen and presentation of her court – all chosen from second year pupils by Stewarton Academy, with the exception of the two pages and Queen’s Highlander who are chosen by the local primary schools.

The celebrations then continue with a street parade along High Street, Main Street and Lainshaw Street, complete with colourful floats and trophies for the best dressed vehicles.  The theme for this year’s floats and window displays will be announced shortly.

Gordon Bennett, Bonnet Guild President, said: “The members of the Bonnet Guild are looking forward to our forthcoming festival week. Preparations are well underway to provide the people of Stewarton and the surrounding districts with a wide range of fun and entertainment.

The celebrations will commence with traditional bunting being hung along the main streets of Stewarton and will finish with the parade to the war memorial and divine service on Sunday 21 June.  The decorated window displays and float parade on Saturday 20 June, is sure to be one of the most colourful and anticipated parts of the week and we are hoping for record participation this year!

“So remember, festival week is for you, the people of Stewarton.  Please come along and enjoy the many activities. I look forward to meeting many of you during the course of the week and to seeing a large crowd on Avenue Square for the crowning of this year’s Corsehill Queen.”

The details of the chosen Corsehill Queen and her court are expected to be announced at the beginning of April and a full programme of festival events will be available nearer the time. Watch local press for details.

This year marks the 82nd annual Bonnet Guild festival since it began in 1933. The festival was originally created by local businessmen in Stewarton to provide a summer gala day for local families.

Today, it is a week-long community festival, run by volunteer members of the Bonnet Guild – a non-profit organisation. All proceeds raised from this year’s festival will go towards ensuring the local festival will return next year for the whole community to enjoy once again.

Anyone interested in helping, supporting or donating to this year’s Festival should contact President Gordon Bennett on 01560 482987.
