J.W. Hewitt Hairdressers

A local institution closed his doors recently in Stewarton, Davie Hewitt was in business for over 60 years and his father Jimmy opened the business 30 years before this. David joined his father in 1958 and went on to become the longest serving barber in The Bonnet Toun

We are a local team at The Review Magazine with many of us getting our hair cut with David in our younger days. Colin who is involved with the review recalls a time he asked for the letters KFC (Kilmarnock Football Club) to be shaved into the back of his head as a young boy, only to be met with a stare then a shake of the head and a smile. He did do it for 50p a letter, probably as he is a massive Killie fan, it would have been interesting if someone asked him for auld firm letters.  Others always remember going in with the magazines in the corner, you were always guaranteed a wee read of an old football or car mag or that days newspapers. Another member of the team recalls the pictures on the wall of the different hair styles, these remained on the wall till the closing of the shop and became a part of the furniture in the place.

David was a man of few words but his hard work and dedication to the town was incredible, he could have hung up his scissors many moons ago but felt a loyalty to his older customers who had been going to him from a very young age to their later years. He was always involved in the Bonnet Guild for many years, working tirelessly in the background and giving back to the local community. The final memory was when you rushed up to Davie’s shop when it was Bonnet Guild week, trying to get the form to get the football team in before it was too late. He would always stand poker faced as you would wait to see if you had missed the boat, rushing back home to get the names down and gather the cash from your mates then back up to see if you made the cut. Great memories.

Davie said “I’d like to thank all my customers from both near and far, for their valued and loyal custom over the past sixty-two years”.

Enjoy your retirement Davie from everyone at The Review Magazine, am sure we speak for the whole community it is well earned and hopefully you can get back to Rugby Park soon to watch your beloved Ayrshire Killie.
